On August 8, 2017 at approximately 8:00 PM the Jackson County Sheriff's Department received a report of a possible impaired driver traveling south on US Highway 31 from County Road 1000 North. It was reported that the vehicle was all over the roadway and had struck a guardrail on US 31. According to a witness the vehicle in question had struck a van being driven by Billy Stout of Seymour head on. Billy's vehicle was facing north and stopped at a construction red light. Seymour Officer Jeremy Helmsing located the 2013 Chevrolet Impala and its driver, 33 year old Pamoja Engelking of Columbus. Engelking failed a field sobriety test. A four year old child was a passenger in Engelking's vehicle. Stout stated that Engelking's white 2013 Chevrolet Impala came through the one lane construction site and didn't move over into its lane, striking Stout's vehicle head-on. Stout wasn't injured in the accident. Stout said the Impala was traveling around 5 MPH at the time it hit his vehicle. A guardrail, a mailbox and a newspaper box were also damaged. Engelking was arrested for for Leaving the Scene of an accident, Neglect of a Dependent, Operating While Intoxicated with a minor under 18, and having Blood-Alcohol content of .08% or greater. Seymour Officers Jacob Florine, Seth Sage and deputy Rick Meyer assisted Helmsing at the scene.
